The Collaborative Research Group “Visual and Expressive Cultures” of the Africa Europe Group of Interdisciplinary Studies organises, together with the Institute for Urban and Landscape Studies, the Centre for African Studies and the Chair of Social Anthropology at the University of Basel are hosting a workshop on the theme, Re-Imagining the African City: The Arts and Urban Politics.

The workshop aims at rethinking the place of the arts in African urban politics as a subject of analysis, as a driving force of social and political change or as an arbiter of culture. Contributions on all arts and all parts of Africa are welcome. Scholars working on topics related to the theme are invited to send abstracts of a maximum of 250 words and a short CV (max. 500 characters) to [email protected] by October 16, 2015. A limited number of travel grants will be available for African scholars working in Africa.

The Centre for African Studies will provide a letter of invitation to assist individuals in expediting visas and securing funding. If you need a letter of invitation, you should submit a request at the same time you submit your paper proposal.
