Call for Papers: Annual Congress of the South African Sociological Association

Deadline: 20 March 2015 - 12:00am

Dates: 28 - 1 July 2015

Where: Johannesburg, South Africa

Venue: University of Johannesburg

SASA’s next annual congress will take place at the University of Johannesburg in Johannesburg from 28 June to 1 July 2015.

Congress theme:
Contours of Violence: Manifestations, Interventions and Social Justice

South Africa is home to three of the fifty most violent cities in the world, with Cape Town, Ethekwini (Durban), and Nelson Mandela Bay all making their way into the recently released Mexico’s Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice rankings, which also included Johannesburg until three years ago. With their record rates of domestic violence, poverty, and unemployment, the urban spaces of South Africa have been described as places of structural violence. Beyond physical force, ordinary people living in the towns and cities of this region also battle to overcome symbolic as well as hidden forms of violence.

While papers that relate to the overall conference theme of Contours of Violence are particularly welcome, a broad range of urban studies papers are invited and the conversation will not be limited to a focus on violence.

If you wish to present a paper in this working group, please submit an abstract online at this link within four weeks, by Friday, 20 March 2015.
