Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor

The University of Cape Town is one of the leading teaching and research institutions in Africa. In terms of subject rankings, Geography at UCT has been ranked among the top 50 universities in the 2018 QS world university rankings. The Department of Environmental and Geographical Science seeks to make an appointment at the Senior Lecturer or Associate Professor level. Candidates with an academic background and research experience in human geography are invited to apply for this position. This is a permanent academic position on academic conditions of service and is available from 1 September 2019.

Requirements include:

For appointment at Senior Lecturer level:

  • A PhD in an appropriate field;
  • At least 5 year’s relevant academic work experience;
  • Experience with teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels;
  • Experience with post graduate supervision;
  • Evidence of a solid publications record;
  • An ability to raise funding for research.

For appointment at Associate Professor Level:

  • A PhD in an appropriate field;
  • At least 10 year’s relevant academic work experience;
  • Experience with teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels;
  • Evidence of curriculum development
  • Successfully supervised and graduated several post graduate students;
  • A strong research career and evidence of quality research outputs;
  • Engagement with national and international scholars; and
  • Evidence of funds raised for research


Experience in political, historical or economic geography.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Supervise postgraduate students;
  • Develop and lead an independent research programme in an area of focus in the Department;
  • Raise funds for research;
  • Contribute to curriculum design and development; and
  • Contribute to departmental management/administrative responsibilities as appropriate.
