It is now possible for anyone to easily access very fine-grained climate information for Ethiopia, pertaining to temperature and rainfall over the last 30 years, via a set of online maps.
“The information could be used in a number of applications, including long term investment and developmental studies, tourist information, disaster reduction and preparedness planning and more,” said Dula Shanko, NMA’s Deputy Director-General, during the official public launch of the maps in December 2011.
Researchers working on this project from the International Research Institute for Climate and Sociaty (IRI) at Columbia University and the National Meterology Agency of Ethiopia (with funding from Google.org) suggest that this process could be replicated in other parts of Africa to make climate data more accessible for application in a range of sectoral contexts. In many parts of the continent it is notorously difficult to get hold of weather station data because in many of the records are still only paper-based and tend to be locked up in the Meteorolgical Offices of each country with officials reticent to make it publicly available as it is seen as a potential source of revenue for government agencies struggling with budgetary contraints.
